Evaluation of PBS Kids
The PBS Kids website is a website run by PBS with the focus of educating and entertaining children. The website is marketed towards a young to primary school aged audience, particularly those learning the basics of math, reading, and writing. The information presented on the website, in the form of games and videos, is in both an appropriate and a digestible format for the intended audience.
The publisher of the website is the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), a well known and reputable American public television broadcaster, one which has been focused on the presentation of education and entertainment content for children since the early 90’s (source)
The website, having been copyrighted fairly recently, in 2023, is very clearly revised and updated quite regularly. This regular revision of content found on the web page means that the information on the website is kept accurate and up to date. This also means that the links found on the website are functional.  In terms of the information that is presented on the website, it is very clearly created with the intent of entertaining children first and educating them second, meaning there is nothing very controversial or ground-breaking that is displayed.
The website does contain many features that cater towards the online safety of the children that will be using it, particularly when using any sort of external link, of which are very few and far between to begin with.  
Accessibility is the biggest area in which the website can improve. Whilst there is option for font size and audio level, and the whole website itself is rather high contrast, it doesn’t have any sort of screen reader accessibility or audio description for the visually impaired. The website also makes a point not to mention any sort of accessibility features or provide parent and carer any sort of information in a similar vein.
Reflection of Evaulation
For my second professional development activity I chose to analyse and evaluate a website designed for children. The website that I ended up choosing was PBS Kids, an online website run by the children's division of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) which is an American public television broadcaster. 
In terms of the actual analysis and evaluation I simply wrote it as I would when analysing anything else, asking myself questions regarding the currency and relevance of the information and material that is presented on the webpage as well as considering the creator, that being PBS, and what credentials they carry. 
I found several rather gaping holes in my knowledge with this specific task in that I am neither a web designer nor am I a trained educator. I have some knowledge surrounding web design having designed my own webpage for a class in the past, but I am certainly not an expert. However, having a little understanding of online design allowed me to better analyse, especially with regard to the website's accessibility, and it also opened my eyes to some typical problems frequently present in website design. 
The specifics of children's education is also an area in which my knowledge is admittedly lacking. Overall, this was certainly an activity that exposed many areas in which I can learn more, particularly if I am looking to move into a job where I will have to work alongside children and the resources that are designed for them. 
The subject that I chose to look into alongside this activity was diversity. Diversity is something that is very important to display in general but it is particularly important in children's content, particularly educational content (Donohue, 2019). Diversity is something that is displayed quite heavily on the website with the games displaying children form a variety of ethnic backgrounds and cultures, something that is good for young children to observe, even passively (Donohue, 2019).
In terms of the actual website, it unfortunately does not cater to a very diverse audience. The website is perfect for anyone who is able-bodied and fluent in English, but for anyone else it is likely very difficult. It is important to consider different types of disabilities when designing a website and things like audio accessibility, with something like captioning, and visual accessibility in the form of audio description or screen reader compliance is something that helps those with visual and auditory disabilities (Cunningham, et al., 2012). The PBS Kids website does not do a good job of this at all with little to no accommodation for these disabilities being made. Cognitive disabilities are something that are tackled much better by the website, although this is more than likely by accident, with the very simple design of the website created mostly for its young audience. The large, simple fonts and bold colours found extensively on the site help with disabilities like dyslexia (Cunningham, et al., 2012). Overall, the PBS Kids website does a very good job at representing a diverse audience at a surface level, but when it comes to actually catering to this audience it falls down considerably.
